PSU Morrow Center

The Morrow Center was a new computer lab and tutor office in Portland State University’s athletic building. Designed as a result of an alumnus’ donation, the goal of the project was to provide athletes with a convenient space that is welcoming and conducive to academic work.

The design is intended to provide a high contrast with the utilitarian athletic building and be highly visible from corridors and the swimming pool below. Curved forms, intricate detailing, dramatic lighting and wood panels set the project far apart from the existing concrete and brick building.

Storefront glass with selected translucent areas was designed in to make the interior of the lab visible from the corridor, while still giving users adequate privacy screening.

Lighting in the computer lab is designed to minimize glare and to provide task light on the desks.  Subtle ambient light is from a glowing circle in the ceiling.
